Union Monsters

Not in Union

In Edison Format, all union monsters have this text: “A monster can only be equipped with 1 Union Monster at a time.”

Also note that not all Union Monsters protect the equipped monster from both battle and card effects. You can see their exact Edison-PSCT here.

Only the following monsters protect from both battle and card effect:

When equipping to a monster:

  • If the target is no longer appropriate (eg, it's no longer a Machine monster and was targeted by Machina Gearframe), or is flipped face-down/leaves the field, the Equipped Union is destroyed.

While equipped to a monster:

  • If both the Union monster and the monster it is equipped to would be destroyed by the same card effect
(eg vs "Icarus Attack" / "Black Rose Dragon"):
the effect to "destroy this card instead" is not applied.

  • If the equipped monster is flipped face-down/leaves the field:
The Union is destroyed at the exact same time (by game mechanics).

  • The Union is treated as an Equip Spell (and not a monster).
If it's sent to the GY from the Spell/Trap Zone, it's treated as a Spell Card going to the GY.
It becomes a monster again while in the GY.

  • If "Dimensional Fissure" is applying, destroyed Unions in the Spell/Trap Zone will be not be banished.

When Summoning an Equipped Union:

  • If the Equipped Monster is flipped face-down/leaves the field:
The Union is destroyed at the exact same time (by game mechanics).

  • If there is no empty Monster Zone when the effect resolves:
The Union Monster is sent to the GY.

  • The Union Monster must be summoned in Attack Position
    (modern errata often exclude this).

"At the Exact Same Time"

  • This means that the timing for eg Machina Peacekeeper leaving the field is identical to the timing of the equipped monster leaving the field.
  • If the equipped monster leaving the field was the last thing to happen: Peacekeeper's effect can activate.
