Conjunctions

Conjunctions

When resolving complex effects, conjunctions are used to:

  1. Convey the order in which the parts of effects apply (whether cards will miss their timing or not).
  2. Show how much of an effect should resolve (effects always resolve as much as possible - conjunctions tell you how much is possible).

There are five conjunctions, shown below. Note that "Also, after that" is seldom seen in Edison-era card text.

Conjunctions

Conjunction Required Timing
and Both are required Simultaneous
also Neither is required Simultaneous
and if you do First part required Simultaneous
then First part required Sequential
also, after that Neither is required Sequential

Examples

Quickdraw Synchron: "Send 1 other monster from your hand to the GY and Special Summon this card from your hand".

"and" requires both parts (send 1 other monster from your hand to the GY) and (Special Summon this card) to happen.
Note that this effect of Quickdraw is unique to Edison Format.

  • If you don't send, you cannot Summon.
  • If you don't Summon, you cannot send.

"and" is simultaneous, so it is not the cause of missed timing.

  • If you send "Peten the Dark Clown" to the GY this way, you can activate its effect (on a new chain).
  • If you Special Summon Quickdraw this way, "Torrential Tribute" can be activated in response to the Summon.

Book of Life: "Special Summon the first target, also, banish the second target".

"also" doesn't require either part to happen.

  • If you don't Special Summon, you still banish.
  • If you don't banish, you still Special Summon.

"also" is simultaneous, so it is not the cause of missed timing.

  • If you Special Summon "The Kick Man", you can activate Kick's effect (on a new chain).
  • If you banish "Cyber Ouroboros", you can activate Ouroboros' effect (on a new chain).

Drill Warrior: "Discard 1 card, and if you do, banish this card".

"and if you do" requires the first part (discard 1 card) to happen, else the 2nd part (banish this card) won't apply.

  • If you don't discard a card, you don't banish Drill Warrior.
  • If you can't banish Drill Warrior, you still discard a card.

"and if you do" is simultaneous, so it is not the cause of missed timing.

  • If you discard "Jinzo - Returner" this way, you can activate Returner's effect (on a new chain).

Drill Warrior: "Special Summon this card, then add 1 monster from your GY to your hand".

"then" requires the first part (Special Summon this card) to happen, else the 2nd part (add 1 monster from your GY to your hand) won't apply.

  • If you don't Special Summon Drill Warrior, you can't add a monster from your GY to your hand.

"then" is sequential, so it can be the cause of missed timing.

  • If you add a card from your GY to your hand this way, "Bottomless Trap Hole" cannot be activated in response to the Summon.
