Ignition-Priority

Ignition Priority

After a monster is successfully Summoned, the turn player can activate an ignition effect straight away as Chain Link 1.

Basic Example:

  • “Exiled Force“ is Normal Summoned successfully.
  • Its controller can activate its effect before the opponent can activate “Trap Hole“.

Intermediate Example:

  • “Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier” is Synchro Summoned successfully.
  • Its controller can immediately activate its effect, paying the cost of discarding cards and choosing targets.
  • As Chain Link 2, the opponent can chain their “Bottomless Trap Hole“.

Advanced Example:

  • “Swap Frog” is Normal Summoned.
  • Its controller chooses to not activate its effect to send a monster from their Deck/field to the GY.
  • Instead, they choose to activate its effect to gain an extra Summon, paying the cost of returning “Swap Frog“ to the hand.
  • They can then chain their own “Torrential Tribute“ to the effect of Swap Frog.

Expert Example:

  • “Vorse Raider“ is Normal Summoned successfully.
  • Its controller retains their Ignition Priority, and can activate the ignition effect of “Plaguespreader Zombie“ in their GY.
  • Then, they can chain their own “Torrential Tribute“ to that effect of “Plaguespreader Zombie“.

Some notes on Ignition Priority:

  • Ignition Priority only applies for Ignition Effects. These are effects that usually start with “Once per turn“ or “During your Main Phase“.
  • If a trigger effect triggers when a monster is summoned, you can no longer use your Ignition Priority.
  • For example, if Sangan is sent to the GY to Synchro Summon Brionac, Sangan’s mandatroy effect must activate, and Brionac's effect cannot be activated on the same chain (but Bottomless Trap Hole could be).
