The Battle Phase
Start Step
When you enter the Battle Phase, the first step is the Start Step.
Nothing usually happens here, but players may still activate cards/effects before going to the next step (for example, Threatening Roar).
Battle Step
The Turn Player chooses a monster to attack, and an attack target. This is an Attack Declaration.
A monster is "battling" starting from Attack declaration.
However, it has not "battled" until it has reached damage calculation (regardless of it being a direct attack or not).
- Only one chain can happen in response to an Attack Declaration.
- Cards/effects can still be activated later in the Battle Step, before the Damage Step.
- For example, if neither player responds to the Attack Declaration:
Skill Drain can still be activated before entering the Damage Step, and Dimensional Prison cannot be activated for the remainder of this attack.
Replays
If the number of possible attack targets changes during the Battle Step, a replay occurs.
- You can choose to attack with the same monster again, or otherwise cancel the attack.
- If a replay occurs, it is no longer possible to respond to that Attack Declaration. For example, Mirror Force and Dimensional Prison cannot be activated. However, effects that activate in response to a monster being targeted for an attack (like Vengeful Shinobi) can still activate.
- Costs for the attack (eg 1000 LP for Dark Elf) are not paid again.
